Spicy and delicious Indonesian food called pecel lele with hot sambal

Sury and I like to eat spicy--though initially she didn't like that kind of foods. Tonight as we talked about why is it haram for muslims in Indonesia to wish Christians Merry Christmas, we ate pecel lele, a traditional food, in nearby stall. Pecel lele consists of rice, sambal and fried cat fish. If it is your first time to hear the word sambal, I have to let you know that sambal is made of chili pepper. Very hot but so delicious that you will add more.

The catfish are normally taken from a tambak, a fish breeding place. Pecel lele can be found everywhere in Indonesia, from urban to big cities like Jakarta. Sury and I ate the pecel in a food stall owned by a Sundanese. They talk in Sundanese accent when they ask me and Sury our menu.

Although pecel lele is actually not my favorite food, I like the spicy sambal from this stall--sweet and hot. Sury can't help with the spice, but I keep eating until it's all eaten up, including Sury's. Lailul Agsya, Sury's son, also likes pecel lele with no sambal.

One day when you happen to visit Indonesia, please give it a try. Pecel lele is an alternative when you cannot find fried rice or gado-gado seller.
